Definition

Prepare moderately complex scaled maps, detailed plans and working drawings from sketches, field notes, or general instructions; may lead other drafting technicians.

Distinguishing Characteristics

Duties performed at this level require the skills of journey-level drafting technicians with the additional responsibility for drafting assignments with a minimum of working data; may lead work of other drafting and clerical personnel.

Typical Work

Prepare drawings to meet government and industrial contract requirements; 

May act as lead over drafting technicians; 

Prepare design detail and assembly drawings for use in construction of various equipment and buildings; 

Prepare graphs, charts, and drafting displays for publication and engineering journals; 

Draw schematics, wiring, or block diagrams from sketches, parts, and instructions; 

Solve geometric design problems and produce working engineering drawings in the solution of various design problems; make design calculations; 

Prepare and maintain comprehensive engineering and building record drawing systems; 

Research technical information from record vault files, engineering catalogues, and technical handbooks; 

Perform related duties as required.

There may be instances where individual positions must have additional licenses or certification. It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure the appropriate licenses/certifications are obtained for each position.

Desirable Qualifications

Two years of full-time experience or training as a Drafting Technician 2, or equivalent. 

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. 

Examination Requirements: 

  • A job element examination (including written, E & T and oral components) scored on the basis of job related experience, training, skill, ability and other elements which are established through job analysis.
