Definition

Under general supervision of a higher-level Pest Biologist, conducts field operations to survey for pest or invasive species and carries out field operations to eradicate invasive species using biological, chemical, or mechanical methods. Conducts inspections of public, private, and commercial property for the presence of pest or invasive species and for compliance with quarantines or other phytosanitary regulations.

Typical Work

Designs surveys to detect invasive species and develops protocols to satisfy international and national phytosanitary regulations;

Directs field activities associated with statewide survey projects;
Analyzes collected data;

Selects specialized procedures and techniques used in the laboratory or field identification of invasive pest species;

Evaluates the feasibility of eradicating individual invasive species;

Prepares and conducts invasive species identification training for personnel in the agency and stakeholder groups;

Prepares State Environmental Policy Act, National Environmental Policy Act, and other pertinent environmental documentation;

Manages statewide fruit tree and plant stock certification projects;

Represents the department at public meetings, news media events and other meetings;

Interacts with news media as department representative;

Assists in the development of grants, budgets and rules;

Develops field protocols;

May supervise Pest Biologist 1 and/or field or laboratory personnel.
Issues phytosanitary certificates;

Prepares reports as assigned;

Performs other duties as required.

There may be instances where individual positions must have additional licenses or certification. It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure the appropriate licenses/certifications are obtained for each position.

Desirable Qualifications

A Bachelor’s degree involving major study in a biological science or closely allied field.

AND

Four years’ experience in detection, survey, control or eradication of pest or invasive species.


AND

One year of supervisory experience.

OR

A Master’s degree in a biological science or closely allied field.

AND

Two years’ experience in detection, survey, control or eradication of pest or invasive species.

AND

One year of supervisory experience.

OR

Two years of experience as a Pest Biologist 1.
