Definition

In an in-training capacity, assists in the inspections of elevators and other lifting apparatus to determine and enforce compliance with state laws, rules and adopted national codes for elevators and other conveyances.

Distinguishing Characteristics

As the in-training level of the series, this level concentrates on gaining on the job experience working under close supervision learning aspects of elevator and other conveyance inspections to include conveyance safety, nomenclature, applicable codes, rules, laws and customer conflict resolution.

Typical Work

Assists in safety inspections of elevators, escalators, dumbwaiters, belt-type lifts, and moving walks and other conveyances with respect to their operation, installation, alteration, repair, maintenance and observe safety testing; 

Assists in inspections within elevator cars, hoist ways, machine rooms and pits;

Assist in inspections of existing installations and new constructions to observe full load, drop and safety testing; 

During inspections, ensures elevator mechanics and workers are properly licensed;

Performs other work as required.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of:  safety codes as they pertain to elevators or similar devices.    

Ability to:  follow oral and written instructions; make inspections of new and existing installations and to observe full load, drop and safety tests. Understand code enforcement and electrical or mechanical drawings.

Legal Requirement(s)

There may be instances where individual positions must have additional licenses or certification. It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure the appropriate licenses/certifications are obtained for each position.

Desirable Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent

AND

One or more years of related mechanical/electrical trade experience, including equivalent trade experience gained in military service.
