ELECTRICAL PLANS EXAMINER

Definition

Examines plans for electrical installation in schools, colleges and universities, hospitals, public and private buildings and commercial construction, to determine compliance with the National Electrical Code (NEC) and Washington State Rules and Regulations; or develops electrical codes/ construction standards to comply with NEC and/or incorporate into state regulations; or trains Electrical Construction Inspectors in a formal training program.

Typical Work

Reviews electrical plans and specifications to determine compliance with the appropriate Washington State regulations and the National Electrical Code (NEC); compares plans to established state regulations and the NEC; approves or rejects plans as appropriate; 

Prepares clear and concise reports to indicate where electrical plans do not comply with state regulations and the NEC; 

Discusses, coordinates and reviews electrical plans, with architects, engineers, construction supervisors, inspector and the general public; 

Maintains technical knowledge of new technologies in the electrical field, changes and updates the electrical code (NEC) for industrial, commercial and residential, assists the electrical inspection program with interpretations of NEC and the Washington electrical rules and regulations; 

Participates in special projects or assignments such as special inspections, process improvement studies, and productivity measures; 

Attends continuing education training to maintain electrical license; 

Writes letters, prepares reports and keeps work records; 

Performs other work as required.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of:  National Electrical Code and Washington State Wiring Rules and Regulations; standard practices, methods, materials, tools and equipment of electrical trade; industry hazards and safety precautions; computing electrical loads; layout and operation of electrical circuits. 

Ability to:  read and interpret plans and blueprints of electrical installations; interpret and apply electrical codes; explain technical aspects of electrical trade to laymen; meet and deal effectively with people; prepare clear, concise reports.

There may be instances where individual positions must have additional licenses or certification. It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure the appropriate licenses/certifications are obtained for each position.

Desirable Qualifications

Possession of the Journeyman Electrician certificate (EL01) issued by the Department of Labor and Industries and four years of experience as a journeyman electrician, after obtaining an EL01, in the building construction trades, installing and maintaining electrical wiring and equipment in residential, commercial and industrial structures or buildings in compliance with the National Electrical Code or equivalent experience and one year of experience as an electrical inspector determining compliance with the National Electrical Code.

OR 

Four years experience as an electrical inspector, after obtaining an EL01, employed by Labor and Industries or a city or town with an approved inspection program under RCW 19.28.360 and one year of experience as an electrical inspector for a large public jurisdiction. 

OR 

Two years of college-level training in electrical engineering and six years of continuous practical electrical installation experience and one year of experience as an electrical inspector for a large public jurisdiction.

OR 

Four years of college-level training in electrical engineering and four years of continuous practical electrical installation experience and one year of experience as an electrical inspector for a large public jurisdiction. 

A valid driver’s license is required for these positions.
