Definition

Positions at this level, either as a single operator or as a lead shift operator of the electronic communications systems, are responsible for receiving, transmitting, and coordinating roadway conditions and services requirements via multi-frequency base stations. The incumbent is accountable for all decisions and actions taken on a shift. Positions monitor and operate freeway traffic control systems, operate computer enhanced information distribution systems on the roadway and for the media, monitor electronic, video, and computer systems, and, where assigned, adjust environment control systems, tunnel fire detection and fire suppression systems.

Typical Work

Keeps the supervisor apprised of emergency or unusual incidents in progress and takes control of the system during these incidents;

Assists in the evaluation of new or modified equipment; may assist with the development of specifications for the acquisition of new equipment;

Maintains, publishes and distributes necessary directories and other publications and reports;

Assumes complete responsibility for the supervision of the radio and environmental system control in the absence of the supervisor, providing control, direction, and guidance to all personnel and keeping command personnel informed as necessary;

Documents personnel work performances during the supervisor's absence. Evaluates productivity and efficiency of work unit and works closely with the supervisor to establish policies and procedures and to promote uniformity of operations;
Acts as a primary trainer for on-the-job training given to new employees;

Works with radio and maintenance personnel to recognize potential problems and system malfunctions so appropriate repairs can be made.

There may be instances where individual positions must have additional licenses or certification. It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure the appropriate licenses/certifications are obtained for each position.

Uniforms may be required and background checks may be required.

Desirable Qualifications

Positions typically require a High School graduation or GED

AND

Two years of experience as a principal radio operator or dispatcher using multi-band, two-way radio equipment and personal computers.
