Definition

Leads other Electronic Media Producers in design and evaluation of productions.   

Designs, creates, produces, directs and edits complex live and recorded digital multimedia and audio-video/television programs and material with technical and production values and content comparable to prevailing national broadcast standards.

Distinguishing Characteristics

Under general direction, regularly assigns, instructs and checks work of employees developing television programs, films, digital multimedia, and audio-video instructional materials for local and national distribution.

Typical Work

Produces, organizes and directs all phases in the production of digital multimedia, television programs, films and audio/video instructional materials; 

Provides leadership and support to Electronic Media Producers on their assigned productions by participating in and designing productions; reviews and discusses daily footage as necessary; provides training and support in use of electronic editing and other complex equipment; 

Develops budgets, writes grant proposals, develops production schedules and reports; 

Directs, organizes and manages all phases of complex productions and series which may include directing and/or performing writing scripts, blocking, audio, graphics, visualizing and shooting; 

Performs off-line videotape editing, time-code logging, and on-line videotape conforming, using high end, production house-style computerized editing system(s); 

Produces, directs and edits special events such as duplex teleconferencing via satellite and preparing premasters of interactive video-disc materials and/or other advanced technologies; 

Performs the duties of Electronic Media Producer Specialist; 

Performs related duties as required.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of: principles of visual media production, corporate/non-broadcast production, educational television, and close-circuit television; basic methods of problem solving, learning processes, and principles and methods of employee training. 

Ability to: direct production including making decisions on placement of props, lighting, staging, audio, technical direction of camera(s), and editing; gather and analyze data, draw valid conclusions and make appropriate recommendations; creatively turn abstract ideas into tangible products; write creatively; stay current on technology requirements, changes and trends; use digital technology, software and computers for production of audio-video multimedia; develop and manage budgets; lead staff.

There may be instances where individual positions must have additional licenses or certification.  It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure the appropriate licenses/certifications are obtained for each position.

Desirable Qualifications

A Bachelor’s degree with major field of study in television, communications, or instructional media

AND

five years  progressively responsible experience in television and audio production with instructional television specialization.

OR 

Equivalent education/experience.
