Definition

Under general direction, prepare and examine specimens applying specialized electron microscopy techniques such as thin sectioning, staining thin sections on grids. Provide information about procedures to others in the laboratory. Assess electron microscope and equipment malfunctions. Independently examine and instruct post-doctoral fellows, technicians, students, or others in laboratory procedures on clinical material.

Typical Work

Positions may lead and/or direct lower level staff; 

Instructs post-doctoral fellows, technicians, or student helpers in laboratory procedures;  

Examines clinical specimens by transmission electron microscopy; recognizes tissue type; applies specialized electron microscopy techniques such as thin sectioning, staining thin sections on grids;  

Implements new procedures; conducts literature searches and adapts techniques to specific hospital and research needs;  

Maintains quality control and quality assurance;  

Maintains laboratory equipment such as ultra-microtomes, knife makers, balances, and dark room equipment; 

May supervise lower level staff.

Desirable Qualifications

An Associate's degree in a science-related field

AND

Two years of technical experience in an electron microscope laboratory

OR 

Equivalent education/experience.

New class replaces 4737 Electron Microscope Technician II; adopted June 1, 2005.
