Definition

Positions at this level independently plan, prioritize, develop, and implement environmental/conservation education or community outreach activities for a specific program.  Positions may serve as a coordinator or lead in establishing educational priorities and ensuring their accomplishment.  Positions resolve complex problems or issues and have latitude to determine methods and procedures to complete their work.   Duties include more complex activities such as planning and/or teaching workshops attended by professional educators, administering contracts, overseeing development of all educational/outreach materials for specific program, preparing public involvement plans, resolving and establishing a community outreach strategy, and developing policies and procedures.

Typical Work

Develops, promotes, and implements school educational programs within a region which includes private and public schools and institutions of higher education; 

Oversees the development and implementation of a program’s public education plan and community outreach strategy including the preparation of all the program’s educational/outreach materials;  

Develops environmental/conservation education policies, regulations and guidelines for a specific program; reviews the program and policies to ensure consistent application; 

Acts as the program’s education representative and advocate; 

Provides training to educators;  

May supervise lower level staff.

There may be instances where individual positions must have additional licenses or certification. It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure the appropriate licenses/certifications are obtained for each position. 

Desirable Qualifications

Positions typically require a Bachelor’s degree involving major study in environmental, physical, or natural science, education, communications or closely related field

AND

three years of professional experience involving environmental analysis or control, environmental planning, environmental education, community outreach, or communications activities; or equivalent education/experience.
