Definition

As a certified Group 3 wastewater treatment plant operator, operates and maintains a Class 3 wastewater treatment plant at an institution.

Typical Work

Plans, schedules, and supervises, and performs the operation and maintenance of the wastewater treatment plant and potable water system; supervises unskilled and skilled workers and residents; Instructs operating personnel in proper operating and maintenance methods and procedures;

Inspects plant and advises management regarding maintenance, operational and safety problems and recommends corrective action;

Directs and/or performs and records physical and analytical tests as required by regulatory agencies and applicable permits; Maintain laboratory accreditation; Attends meetings;

Coordinates with contractors, engineers, vendors, maintenance personnel, and other agencies to ensure the uninterrupted operation of the water and wastewater treatment plants;

Orders supplies, parts, and equipment; Keep necessary inventory for testing and maintenance needs; file and maintain all records pertaining to plant operations;

Attend appropriate training relevant to water, wastewater, and sludge as required to keep licenses active and abreast of new laws and technologies;

Instructs operating personnel in proper operating and maintenance methods and procedures;

Performs other work as required.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of: waste water disposal laws; methods, materials and tools used in operation and maintenance of secondary sewage treatment plant; treatment plant safety; heating, power and other related mechanical equipment; standard types of automatic controls.

Ability to: perform chemical tests and analyze plant operation; instruct and supervise others; keep records; make written reports.

Legal Requirement(s)

There may be instances where individual positions must have additional licenses or certification. It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure the appropriate licenses/certifications are obtained for each position.

Desirable Qualifications

Certification by Department of Ecology as a Group 3 wastewater treatment plant operator.

Note:  Classification of the wastewater treatment plant will be determined by the Department of Ecology.

Note:  Incumbents in some positions in this class will be required to obtain and maintain a Water Distribution Manager 2 Certificate of Competency issued by the Department of Health.  This Certificate of Competency is required by the Safe Drinking Water Act.
