Definition

Serves as the electronic communications field technician for an assigned geographic area.  Independently performs skilled work in installing, maintaining, and repairing sophisticated electronic communications systems equipment.  May act as lead worker over other skilled communications personnel assigned to assist them in their area of responsibility. 

Typical Work

Installs, maintains, modifies and repairs a VHF electronics communications system consisting of mobile radio units, portable receivers/transmitters, mobile repeater system, base stations, remote repeater stations, paging encoders, pagers, and communications center consoles; 

Installs, maintains, modifies and repairs sophisticated satellite remote automatic weather station and microwave carrier system equipment;  

Installs, maintains, modifies and repairs data system computer terminals and high speed electronic printers;  

Installs, maintains and repairs electronic digital telephone system equipment;  

Installs, maintains, modifies and repairs the statewide emergency broadcast system equipment, tethersone telemetering equipment, statewide NOAA weather radio system equipment, microprocessor based doppler radar traffic speedmeters, electronic sirens and P.A. system equipment, and other associated electronic and communications systems equipment in vehicles, marine vessels, airplanes, and helicopters;  

Operates environmental test chambers and computer controlled test equipment; provides engineering assistance, fabricates printed circuit boards, and repairs and certifies test equipment to FCC standards;  

Acts as technical advisor on problems with electronic lease site fulfilling landlord responsibilities on technical matters;  

Instructs operational personnel in the proper utilization of the communications and electronics equipment;  

Compiles and prepares the necessary reports and forms that enable the department to compile a statistical analysis for the further development of an efficient communications system;  

Prepares work orders; provides input for invoicing; maintains parts accountability form and records, and assists in inventory of parts and equipment;  

Uses sedans and four-wheel drive vehicles, snow vehicles, and other modes of transportation;  

Leads skilled communications technicians when assigned to assist in their geographic area;  

Performs other work as required. 

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of:  operating and technical principles of microwave carrier systems, two-way mobile radio systems, data systems, digital techniques, computer operations, and all electronic test equipment associated with the communications industry.   

Ability to:  read and comprehend technical manuals and drawings; apply the electronic industry standards and procedures in effectively maintaining sophisticated state-of-the art communications systems in a professional manner.   

Legal Requirement(s)

A valid General Radiotelephone Operator license issued by the Federal Communications Commission is required.

Desirable Qualifications

Four years of experience as an Electronic Communications Systems Technician-Shop.     

OR 

High school graduation or possession of a GED certificate, one year of formal education in electronics and five years' experience in maintenance and repair of at least two of the following:  two-way radio frequency communications systems, microwave carrier systems, or data systems.
