Definition

Performs work in the layout, construction and installation of radio communications electronic, and safety equipment used in Washington State Patrol vehicles and vehicles utilized by other state agencies including boats and aircraft.  Provides training and quality control.

Typical Work

Provides necessary training in technical areas;  

Provides assistance to supervisor and keeps supervisor informed of workers’ progress;  

Provides quality control and monitors production, ensuring that deadlines are met;  

Schedules work, provides guidance and instruction to others;  

Performs installation and removal of two-way radio systems, sirens, citizen band and communications equipment used in Washington State patrol vehicles and vehicles utilized by other state law enforcement agencies including boats and aircraft;  

Assists technicians in construction of electronic equipment and modification of communications equipment and devices;  

Operates various hand and power tools in construction of chassis, control panels, cabinets and mounting devices for radio and testing equipment;  

Keeps work records; prepares reports;  

Performs other work as required. 

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of:  installation and theory of operation of radio transmitting and receiving equipment including elementary principles and practices of electronics, electricity, electrical measurements and mathematics; safety precautions; record keeping.   

Ability to:  read and understand electrical drawings, diagrams, plans and sketches using electrical and electronic symbols; operate various hand and power tools. 

Legal Requirement(s)

A valid General Radiotelephone Operator license issued by the Federal Communications Commission will substitute for two years of experience.

Desirable Qualifications

Graduation from high school or GED equivalent and four years of experience in the installation and removal of any two of the following types of equipment: radio systems, sirens, citizen band, electronic or safety. 

A valid General Radiotelephone Operator license issued by the Federal Communications Commission will substitute for two years of the experience.  

OR 

Two years experience as a Law Enforcement Equipment Technician 1. 

A valid driver’s license is required.
