Definition

Serves as Master of marine vessels transporting passengers, vehicles and/or equipment operating to and from McNeil Island. Supervises a crew on a passenger vessel and/or tugboat. Positions at this level serve, while on duty, as the only Coast Guard licensed person on board a variety of marine vessels.

Typical Work

Operates a variety of marine vessels such as passenger ferry or tugboat/barge;

Observes and enforces U.S. Coast Guard regulations and department policies that pertain to this position;

Supervises the loading and unloading of vessels to ensure maintenance of safety standards;

Conducts crew training and performs drills as required in accordance with U.S. Coast Guard regulations and department policies;

Conducts staff training in passenger safety orientation, Marine Security (MARSEC) and other related subjects as required by Federal, State or local policies or that would be necessary for a safe operation;

Maintains the vessel and its operational and navigational equipment in good operating condition in accordance with U.S. Coast Guard standards;

Lubricates and services vessels and makes minor mechanical adjustments; adjusts ramps for fluctuations of water level; supervises the fueling of vessels in accordance with current policies and procedures and performs vessel and dock maintenance;

Supervises the work of one or more deckhands.

Legal Requirement(s)

All positions within this class must meet the United States Coast Guard Master Inland licensure requirements. There may be instances where individual positions must have additional licenses or certification. It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure the appropriate licenses/certifications are obtained for each position.

Desirable Qualifications

One year of experience operating marine vessels as a licensed Master

 AND

 A valid United States Coast Guard Master Inland license to operate marine vessels up to 100 Gross Registered Tons and a valid radar observer endorsement.
