Class Series Concept

Assists with recreational intramural, extramural revenue/nonrevenue-producing sports programs, social activities, drama, music, outings, literature, and/or arts and crafts activities.

Definition

Under the direction of professional recreation staff, provides entrance level recreation activities, such as assistance in the implementation and organization of specific parts of a recreational revenue/nonrevenue-producing sports program, social activities, drama, music, outings, literature and/or arts and crafts activities.

Distinguishing Characteristics

Paraprofessional level of the series. Coordinates with recreational staff, campus departments, student committees, and sports clubs in conducting parts of a recreational revenue/nonrevenue-producing sports program. Assists in publicizing, scheduling, and monitoring events.

Typical Work

Assists in planning, organizing and scheduling recreational revenue/nonrevenue-producing sports activities; assists in preparation of facilities to support these activities;

Coordinates intramural or extramural recreational revenue/nonrevenue-producing sports programs with student committees and sport clubs; helps assess student interest for programs; recommends changes to appropriate staff person;

Assists in planning, budgeting and monitoring expenses of campus recreational programs;

Works in one or several skill areas, instructing in program of sports, social activities, drama, music, outings, literature, and arts and crafts;
Confers with supervisor to discuss individual's disabilities and determines his limitations insofar as participation is concerned;

May perform therapeutic-type activities with individuals; for example, stack wood building blocks.

Participates actively in the Recreation Department meetings and other departmental and group meetings as may be required;

Makes oral and written progress, proposals, evaluations, promotional, and adjustment reports; maintains records to assess facilities usage and evaluate programs;

Coordinates work with other personnel engaged in carrying out recreation activities;

Assists in contacting community resources in planning for special events;

Directs and supervises residents while riding on trains, buses, or on the merry go-round and/or residents in such activities as swimming, fishing, hiking, attending shows, movies, and other spectator activities;

Works with volunteers assigned to recreation programs;

Performs lifeguard duties and swimming instruction;

Oversees issuance of recreation equipment and supplies;

Performs other work as required.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of: several fields of recreational activities, including specialized knowledge in at least one broad area, such as sports, dramatics, music, social activities, arts and crafts, individual and group recreation techniques; humanities and behavioral sciences; techniques of observing individuals and making oral and written reports.

Ability to: plan, organize, and lead group activities; instruct and encourage individuals in recreation; adapt recreation policies, methods and techniques to specific operational situations; establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees; prepare reports; keep records.

Legal Requirement(s)

There may be instances where individual positions must have additional licenses, certification, or registration. It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure the appropriate licenses/certifications/registrations are obtained for each position.

For positions which include swimming instruction, a valid Water Safety Instructor's Certificate or equivalent issued by American Red Cross or YMCA is required. For positions which include lifeguard duties but not swimming instruction, a valid Senior Lifesaving Certificate or equivalent issued by American Red Cross or YMCA is required.

Desirable Qualifications

A Bachelor's degree involving major study in either (a) recreation, (b) music, drama or physical education or (c) psychology, sociology or education with a minor in recreation, physical education, music or drama.

OR

Three years of experience as a recreational assistant.

OR

Two years of college in recreation or equivalent.  Two years of work experience in recreational or intramural sports programs may substitute for the educational requirements.

OR

Equivalent education/experience.
