Positions at this level perform a variety of journey-level work on bridges and structures. Perform work in the maintenance, repair, operation and reconstruction of bridges and structures. Working independently, incumbents specialize in one or more trades or crafts. Perform journey-level and skilled work in a variety of disciplines, such as carpentry, welding, steel fabrication, electrical, plumbing, masonry, heavy equipment operations, or hydraulics systems.

This is the journey-level of the series. Individuals in this class have established journey-level skills in one or more trades and are assigned to perform independently or as the principal journey worker. They instruct other workers assisting in their specialty and ensure satisfactory completion of assignments.

Positions in this class are assigned to a bridge maintenance crew.

On concrete structures, repairs railings, sidewalks, decks, columns, piers and bulkheads; builds forms and pours and finishes concrete;

Inspects, maintains, and replaces electrical equipment and circuitry involving aerial and navigation lights, wiring, conduit, fixtures, controls, and switches;

On steel structures, uses heat straightening to repair damaged steel railings and members and fabricates steel replacement members; makes deck and sidewalk repairs; cleans and paints steel; performs repairs to and replacement of expansion joints;

On moveable span structures, performs same work as on steel structures and also inspects, maintains, repairs, and replaces electric motors, switches, controls and signal equipment; replaces shafts and bearings; lubricates gears, bearings and other mechanical units; replaces and adjusts lift and pull down cables;

On wood structures, repairs railings, sidewalks, decks, wheel rails and bulkheads; drives piling and installs false work and bents, replaces caps, piles, and girders, treats rotten and damaged wood;

On floating structures, removes and replaces vertical and horizontal trunnions; sets up hydraulic jacks for anchor cable tension readings; makes deck and rail repairs; operates and maintains hydraulic water pumping systems, performs emergency repairs following storms; maintains and replaces cathodic protection systems;

Operate special equipment such as boom truck, manlifts, under bridge inspection trucks and hydra platforms;

Repairs and maintains signs on bridges, walls and tunnels;

Develops preliminary cost estimates of repairs, maintenance or alteration projects;

Reads and interprets plans, blueprints and sketches;

Assures adherence to safety rules and precautions by assigned personnel;

Develops solutions to repair and maintenance problems;

Provides traffic control and operates road vehicles as required to accomplish bridge roadway repair and maintenance tasks;

Operates Class A highway equipment in snow and ice control and in support of bridge maintenance activities;

Operates and maintains the work boat used in repair and maintenance of bridges;

Repairs and replaces wood, steel, and masonry railings, deck, structure members, caps, pilings, walkways, dolphins, and traffic barrier gates;

Assembles staging, rigging, scaffolding, manual hoists including applying ropes, cables, splices, stinson planks, etc.;

Performs work in construction and repair of buildings and other structures;

Performs welding metal fabrication; fabricates structure elements and operates equipment;

Positions may provide guidance or instruction to other workers;

Performs other related work as required.

Knowledge of: carpentry construction, masonry work, electrical service systems, movable span systems and components; equipment inspection and repair; steel fabrication and welding; bridge maintenance inspection; heavy equipment operation; work zone traffic control; safety equipment and procedures; basic computer skills; mathematical calculations; environmental best management practices.

Ability to: use carpentry, masonry, steel fabrication tools, equipment and materials; work at heights requiring fall protection, in confined spaces and in proximity to high volume/high speed traffic; perform basic electrical preventive maintenance and repair; operate work boats, heavy equipment and motor vehicles; read and interpret engineering plans; act in absence of Bridge Maintenance Specialist Lead.

A valid driver’s license is required.

There may be instances where individual positions must have additional licenses or certification. It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure the appropriate licenses/certifications are obtained for each position.

Graduation from high school or possession of a GED certificate.

AND

Two years’ experience as a Maintenance Technician 2 with experience in heavy construction carpentry, concrete, steel fabrication, electrical or millwright.

OR

Journey level standing in a construction trade as attested by:

• Completion of recognized apprenticeship;

OR

• Full journey status in a trade union;

OR

• Four years of experience as a full-time helper to a journey worker in the specified trade;

OR

Equivalent education/experience.

Notes:

A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class A with endorsement N and without air brakes restriction must be attained within the first six months of employment.  Some positions may require the H endorsement which must be attained within 60 days.

Must be capable of working at heights exceeding 100 feet and inside a confined space environment.
