Positions in this series perform maintenance, repair or reconstruction work on bridges and structures. Incumbents typically specialize in one trade or craft performing work in a variety of disciplines, such as: carpentry, welding, steel fabrication, electrical, plumbing, masonry, heavy equipment operations or hydraulic systems. Positions may be required to lead. These positions may need to work at heights exceeding 100 feet, inside a confined space environment, and/or alongside high speed traffic.

Under general supervision, performs sub-journey work in the maintenance, repair, operation and reconstruction on bridges and structures. Positions at this level work under the technical direction of a journey-level trades worker performing work on bridges and structures. Incumbents typically specialize in one trade or craft but perform a variety of sub-journey work requiring a limited knowledge of various trade skills in a variety of disciplines, such as carpentry, welding, steel fabrication, electrical, plumbing, masonry, heavy equipment operations, or hydraulics systems.

This is the entry (sub-journey) level of the series. Individuals in this class are sub-journey level in one or more trades and are assigned to perform under general supervision. Positions work independently with specific instruction performing sub-journey level work on bridges and structures.

Positions in this class are assigned to a bridge maintenance crew.

Operates hand tools, power tools and other shop equipment; assists in welding and metal fabrication; fabricates structure elements with supervision and operates equipment;

On steel structures, assists in heat straightening to repair damaged steel railings and members and fabrication of steel replacement members; assists with deck and sidewalk repairs; cleans and paints steel; assists in repairs to expansion joints;

Assists with the maintenance of concrete structures, repairs railings, sidewalks, decks, columns, piers and bulkheads; builds forms and pours and finishes concrete under the supervision of higher level Bridge Maintenance Specialists;

On wood structures, assists with the repair of railings, sidewalks, decks, wheel rails and bulkheads; drives piling and installs false work and bents; replaces caps, piles, and girders, treats rotten and damaged wood;

On moveable span structures, performs same work as on steel structures and under the supervision of higher level Bridge Maintenance Specialists also inspects, maintains, repairs and replaces electric motors, switches, controls and signal equipment; replaces shafts and bearings; lubricates gears, bearings and other mechanical units; replaces and adjusts lift and pull down cables;

On floating structures, under the supervision of higher level Bridge Maintenance Specialists removes and replaces vertical and horizontal trunions; sets up hydraulic jacks for anchor cable tension readings; makes deck and rail repairs; operates and maintains hydraulic water pumping systems; performs emergency repairs following storms; maintains and replaces cathodic protection systems;

Assists with work in construction and repair of buildings and other structures;

Uses various hand and power tools including gas, electric and air;

Operates Class A highway equipment in snow and ice control and in support of bridge maintenance activities;

Under the supervision of an electrician or Transportation System Technician inspects, maintains, and replaces electrical equipment and circuitry involving aerial and navigation lights, wiring, conduit, fixtures, controls, and switches;

Provides traffic control and operates road vehicles as required to accomplish bridge roadway repair and maintenance tasks;

Operates and maintains the work boat used in repair and maintenance of bridges;

Operate special equipment such as boom truck, manlifts, under bridge inspection trucks and hydra platforms;

Under supervision, assembles staging, rigging, scaffolding, manual hoists including applying ropes, cables, splices, stinson planks, etc.;

Assists with repairs and maintains signs on bridges, walls and tunnels;

Develops preliminary cost estimates of repairs, maintenance or alteration projects;

Assures adherence to safety rules and precautions by assigned personnel;

Performs other related work as required.

Knowledge of: apprentice level carpentry construction, masonry work, electrical service systems, equipment inspection and repair, steel fabrication and welding, bridge repair material usage; basic movable span preventive maintenance and operations; heavy equipment operation; work zone traffic control; safety equipment and procedures; basic computer skills; mathematical calculations.

Ability to: operate basic hand and power tools for carpentry, masonry, and steel fabrication; install materials in accordance with manufacturer instructions; assist in bridge maintenance inspections; work at heights requiring fall protection, in confined spaces, and in proximity to high volume/high speed traffic; perform basic electrical preventive maintenance and repair; operate work boats, heavy equipment and motor vehicles.

A valid driver's license is required.

There may be instances where individual positions must have additional licenses or certification. It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure the appropriate licenses/certifications are obtained for each position.

Graduation from high school or possession of a GED certificate.

Two years as a Maintenance Technician 1. 

OR

Completion of a recognized apprenticeship in a skilled construction trade.

OR

Two years of experience in the construction field which includes carpentry, concrete, steel fabrication, electrical heavy equipment operations, or millwright experience. 

OR

Equivalent education/experience.

• A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class A with endorsement N and without air brakes restriction must be attained within the first six months of employment.
