Definition

Plans and supervises the work of the I-90 tunnel/lids maintenance and operations staff, and has responsibility for the maintenance and operations of the tunnel/lids.

Typical Work

Supervises the I-90 tunnel/lids maintenance and operations crew in the operation, maintenance, repair, and preservation of the tunnel/lids and the systems therein.

Operations activities include: schedules a ten person, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week operations crew covering two separate facilities; provides or arranges for training of tunnel operators; provides direction and guidance to tunnel operators during traffic incidents; coordinates tunnel roadway maintenance activities between various maintenance branches; coordinates activities between maintenance and operations; checks and verifies operators' time cards; checks operations logs for completeness and accuracy; determines and directs any manual settings that are made to the tunnel's environmental systems;

Maintenance activities include: schedules all maintenance and repair activities for the tunnel/lids; determines maintenance and repair priorities on the tunnel electrical, electronic, mechanical, and hydraulic systems; supervises the maintenance and repair of ventilation fans and associated dampers, building ventilation equipment and heating/air conditioning systems, valves and valve stations, fire hydrants, dry standpipes, water and foam mains, sprinkler heads, foam pumps, boilers, recirculation pumps, facility drainage systems, sumps, air compressors, air handling system, heat detectors, flame detectors, fire alarm systems, electrical substations and associated switchgear, circuit breakers, transformers, automatic transfer switches, uninterruptable power supplies, emergency generators, variable frequency drive units, programmable logic controllers, lighting panels, photo sensors, carbon monoxide sensors and related equipment, computers and computer related equipment, control panels, and building cleaning, repair or maintenance; checks and verifies maintenance workers' time cards;

Recommends actions related to employment, promotion, demotion, transfer or discharge, or adjudication of grievances affecting subordinates;

Assists in the development of the annual maintenance plan including fund availability and staffing requirements;

Arranges for the purchase of repair or replacement parts and maintains an M5 inventory of equipment parts and components;

Arranges for and inspects work done through service contracts;

Arranges for and coordinates work done on video and communications equipment by the signals maintenance branch;

Arranges for or coordinates work done in or around the tunnel/lids by bridge or roadway maintenance;

Communicates and coordinates with police and fire departments during emergency situations;

Arranges for and obtains permits or certifications required to comply with local and state ordinances and laws;

Arranges for the rental or lease of privately owned equipment;

Records work accomplished, equipment mileage and utilization, accidents, traffic incidents, and unusual occurrences;

Plans, budgets, and schedules anticipated work;

Inspects and surveys tunnel facilities for maintenance and/or repair needs and safety conditions;

Provides facility tours to interested parties, and meets with the general public, public agencies or community organizations in order to promote or maintain favorable public relations;

Conducts periodic crew safety and training meetings;

Performs other work as required.

Legal Requirement(s)

There may be instances where individual positions must have additional licenses or certification. It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure the appropriate licenses/certifications are obtained for each position.

Desirable Qualifications

One year of experience as a Maintenance Supervisor, Maintenance Supervisor, Bridge, Traffic Signal Supervisor, Electronics Supervisor - Transportation or two years of experience as a Maintenance Lead Technician, Electronics Technician 3, Maintenance Specialist, or Electrician, or Maintenance Lead Technician, Bridge.

A valid driver's license is required.
