In the Washington State Department of Transportation, Washington State Ferries, terminal design office, as a practicing registered professional engineer as defined by RCW 18.43, performs professional mechanical and/or hydraulic engineering work for ferry terminals and facilities projects. Responsible for the mechanical designs and stamps engineering drawings, specifications and reports.

Specializes in the design of hydraulic systems and movable bridges utilizing wire rope hoisting systems.  Assumes responsibility of the mechanical designs and stamps engineering drawings, specifications and reports.  May supervise other engineers or act as a project leader. 

Plans, organizes, coordinates and participates in the design, construction and renovation of hydraulic and mechanical systems of WSF owned facilities; coordinates communication with WSF operations and maintenance staff to develop design criteria, construction documents, and maintenance manuals and schedules; 

Assists in scoping and estimating consultant mechanical design work, and reviews consultant-prepared mechanical designs; reviews and supervises all work done by in-house and consult design firms on hydraulic and mechanical elements; acts as consultant and advisor to professional engineers, architects and advance planners, assisting in coordinating architectural and engineering aspects of facility construction; 

Makes recommendation to WSF departments on new construction or renovation of water-supply systems, sewage disposal systems, heating, ventilation, air-conditioning, and machine design problems; 

Provides mechanical design consultation to maintenance personnel relating to their modifications and upgrades of WSF mechanical installations; assists in training maintenance and operations staff in proper use and upkeep of mechanical systems; 

Provides constructability and peer reviews of mechanical designs; 

Interviews contractors, vendors and others regarding new hydraulic and mechanical equipment; 

Performs other work as assigned.

Knowledge of:  mechanical engineering theory, principles and practices particularly related to hydraulics and building construction; electrical fundamentals; engineering drafting procedures and equipment; fundamentals of electrical and structural engineering; effectiveness and efficiency of various air conditioning and heating systems, water and waste-disposal systems, appurtenances to electrical systems, and hardware and other appurtenances adding to convenience, comfort, efficiency, and safety of complex buildings; construction and maintenance issues for electromechanical devices in the marine environment; geometry, calculus and engineering formulas; fire and building codes; cost estimates for capital outlay requests and for maintenance projects where material and equipment are procured by requisition. 

Ability to: effectively communicate both orally and in writing with internal and external customers and management; work as part of a team; use sound judgment on difficult engineering problems; write specifications for mechanical equipment; understand and interpret specifications, plans and drawings; serve as resident inspector on number of small jobs simultaneously, climb ladders to inspect mechanical equipment, and travel frequently to WSF owned facilities.

Professional registration as an engineer in the branch of mechanical engineering in Washington State, or another state based on registration requirements equivalent to those in Washington state.

(Applicants qualifying through the licensure equivalency option must achieve professional registration as an engineer in the branch of mechanical engineering in the State of Washington within six months of appointment to this class.)

One of the following: 

• Two years current experience as a practicing registered professional engineer in the branch of mechanical engineering working in the field of hydraulic systems;
• A Master’s of Science in mechanical engineering and one year current experience as a practicing registered professional engineer in the branch of mechanical engineering working in the field of hydraulic systems. 

Note:  Possession of a valid State of Washington driver’s license may be required.
