Class Series Concept

Perform a variety of complex invasive and/or non-invasive diagnostic and interventional imaging procedures such as biopsies, aspirations, and drains in a clinical setting. Participate in training medical residents, fellows, students and staff.  Recognize and respond to emergent and life threatening situations.

Distinguishing Characteristics

Independently perform clinical and research examinations and/or procedures in mammography such as x-rays or computerized imaging systems including biopsies, aspirations, and drains; operate complex imaging equipment to perform examinations and procedures such as CT scans, cistograms, and CTAs; guide and monitor patients through procedures; maintain incoming information flow about patients and outgoing information about study results; and participate with physicians in designing study techniques for each examination and/or procedure.

Typical Work

Operate diagnostic imaging equipment to perform examinations in mammography or computed imaging utilizing knowledge of cross-sectional anatomy or any other organ system by use of radionuclides and/or radiopharmaceuticals; 

Prepare patient for examination; explain testing procedures; prepare examination rooms for procedures; 

Review and submit patient medical history to appropriate data collection system, consulting with the physician when appropriate and/or indicated by laboratory protocol; 

Scrub and apply sterile technique in assisting in catheter placement; initiate intravenous therapy and administer contrast media and pharmaceuticals under physician direction; 

Counsel patient regarding safety factors and risks of examination; explain and obtain patient release to participate in examination; 

Monitor patient vital signs and condition throughout procedure; maintain daily log of procedures performed; 

Recognize and respond to life threatening situations which may occur during diagnostic and/or interventional procedures; 

Perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation as necessary;  

Maintain inventory of supplies to be ordered and submit order requests to supervisor; 

Assist in evaluating new products and equipment; perform calibration tests, adjust, and maintain all equipment with proper documentation; 

Assist in maintaining continuing education and research files; 

Execute standard calibration procedures and establish guidelines for equipment; 

Orient and provide information and instruction to medical residents, fellows, students, and staff who are rotating and/or assigned to the specialty area; 

Administer contrast media and pharmaceuticals under physician direction; 

Administer prescribed sedation to patient under physician direction when necessary; 

Perform related duties as required.

Legal Requirement(s)

Certified by the State of Washington as a Radiologic Technologist. 

For technologists in mammography, certified by ARRT as a Mammography Technologist. 

There may be instances where individual positions must have additional licenses or certification. It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure the appropriate licenses/certifications are obtained for each position. 

Desirable Qualifications

Satisfactory completion of formal technology training in an AMA approved school, registration by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) 

OR 

Two years of technical imaging experience 

OR

Equivalent education/experience.
