Definition

Perform radiation therapy planning procedures and provide technical review of simulation and dose calculation. Oversee and review radiation therapy treatment.

Distinguishing Characteristics

Single class - no series. Under general direction, perform treatment planning for radiation therapy.

Typical Work

Develop individual plans for courses of radiation therapy; perform tumor localizations, dose calculations, and treatment simulations. Review treatment plans, consult with physicians and prepare treatment summary documents.

Oversee work assigned to radiation therapy technologists involved in treatment planning, train new employees, and assist with performance evaluations; Perform quality assurance of radiation therapy ensuring correct treatment delivery and documentation in the medical record;

Assist physicians and physicists in intracavitary and interstitial placement of radioactive sources; perform dose calculations and localizations of this therapy;

Participate in the training and orientation of radiation oncology physicians and radiation therapy technologists, and other assigned staff;

Prepare a variety of reports, such as medical and activity reports, charge documents, etc.;

Perform related duties as required.

Desirable Qualifications

A Bachelor's Degree in the physical or biological sciences

OR

Registered in Radiation Therapy Technology by the American Registry of Radiological Technologists or equivalent organization

AND

Two years of experience in Radiation Therapy Technology

AND

Completion of a one-year program in Medical Dosimetry recognized by the American Association of Medical Dosimetrists

OR

One year of on-the-job training in dosimetry under the supervision of a dosimetrist, medical physicist or radiation oncologist

Equivalent education/experience.
