Individuals in this class have established journey-level skills in one or more trades and perform as a lead worker.

 

Positions in this class are assigned to a bridge maintenance crew.

Leads journey-level maintenance, repair, reconstruction work on bridges and structures;

Trains subordinate employees;

Operates and maintains movable bridges;

Maintains, repairs, and replaces mechanical equipment comprising floating draw spans, cable, systems, locking and trunnion mechanisms, and hydraulic water pumping systems;

Inspects, maintains, and repairs concrete floatation structures, pumping, cleaning, and apply epoxy patching as required; adjust anchor cables;

Inspects, maintains, and replaces electrical equipment and circuitry involving obstruction lights, wiring, conduit, fixtures, controls, and switches;

Inspects and repairs steel structures and mountings by sand-blasting, welding, heat straightening, fabrication and painting;

Provides traffic control and operates road vehicles as required to accomplish bridge roadway repair and maintenance tasks;

Operates Class A highway equipment in snow and ice control and in support of bridge maintenance activities;

Operates and maintains the work boat used in repair and maintenance of bridges;

Repairs and replaces wood, steel, and masonry railings, deck, structure members, caps, pilings, walkways, dolphins, and traffic barrier gates;

Assembles staging, rigging, scaffolding, manual hoists including applying ropes, cables, splices, stinson planks, etc.;

Repairs and maintains signs on bridges, walls and tunnels;

Develops preliminary cost estimates of repairs, maintenance or alteration projects;

Performs preventative maintenance and repair on all types of mechanical equipment such as; clean or change filters, change oil, grease, adjust drive belts; inspect sprockets, shafts and bearings to ensure proper operations;

Reads and interprets plans, blueprints and sketches;

Assures adherence to safety rules and precautions by assigned personnel;

Develops solutions to repair and maintenance problems;

Performs other related work as required.

Knowledge of: carpentry construction, masonry work, electrical service systems, movable span systems and components; equipment inspection and repair; steel fabrication and welding; bridge maintenance inspection; heavy equipment operation; work zone traffic control; safety equipment and procedures; computer skills; mathematical calculations; environmental best management practices; applicable department policies and procedures.

Ability to: lead and train others; assign and check work; coordinate tasks with other work groups; assume accountability for quality and timeliness of work of the crew; schedule, plan and document work; provide job cost estimates; use job related technology; communicate orally and in writing; interact with the public; read and interpret engineering plans; use carpentry, masonry, steel fabrication tools, equipment and materials; work at heights requiring fall protection, in confined spaces and in proximity to high volume/high speed traffic; perform electrical preventive maintenance and repair; operate work boats, heavy equipment and motor vehicles; evaluate and implement complex traffic control plans; act in supervisor’s absence.

A valid driver’s license is required.

 

There may be instances where individual positions must have additional licenses or certification. It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure the appropriate licenses/certifications are obtained for each position.

Graduation from high school or possession of a GED certificate.

 

AND

 

One year of experience as a Maintenance Lead Technician

 

OR

 

Two years of experience as a Bridge Maintenance Specialist 2 or Bridge Maintenance Specialist 3.

 

 

Notes:

 

• A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class A with endorsement N and without air brakes restriction must be attained within the first six months of employment.  Some positions may require the H endorsement which must be attained within 60 days. 

 

Must be capable of working at heights exceeding 100 feet and inside a confined space environment, and/or alongside high speed traffic.
