Definition

Supervise Vascular Technologists and laboratory support staff; direct the daily operation of a vascular technology laboratory; coordinate clinical, research, and education programs; perform diagnostic vascular examinations independent of physician supervision in a laboratory, patient care unit, and surgical setting; and interpret and present diagnostic findings to referring healthcare providers.

Distinguishing Characteristics

With delegated authority, interview and recommend selection of applicants, conduct training, assign and schedule work, act upon leave requests, conduct annual performance evaluations and recommend disciplinary action.

Under general direction, direct the operation of a vascular technology laboratory including developing and managing operating budget, developing operational policies and procedures, and determining staffing and equipment needs.

Typical Work

Develop and manage the operating budget for a vascular laboratory;

Develop policies and procedures for the operation of a vascular laboratory;

Determine staffing requirements based on patient census; recruit and select qualified staff;

Plan for allocation of equipment necessary to meet patient study requirements;

Develop and implement training protocols; assess staff performance; coach, counsel, and/or recommend corrective action appropriate for performance deficits;

Coordinate laboratory operation with medical center departments and medical community to assure continuity of patient care; oversee daily clinical caseload; participate with housestaff in prioritization of patient studies;

Act as a liaison for the laboratory housestaff, ancillary hospital and health sciences staff, nursing units, medical community health care specialists and medical equipment manufacturer representatives;

Maintain inventory control of laboratory equipment and supplies; authorize purchase orders;

Oversee the daily performance of diagnostic equipment; ensure operational safety; coordinate repair services with clinical caseload;

Evaluate and recommend new diagnostic ultrasound and related physiological testing equipment; oversee evaluation of prototype equipment and/or equipment software; maintain documentation of evaluation protocols; assure confidentiality of proprietary information;

Coordinate laboratory participation in the quality assurance program; identify areas for evaluation; oversee monitoring and data collection; develop and implement actions for correction;

Maintain accredited status for the vascular laboratory in accordance with the Intersocietal Committee for Accreditation of Vascular Laboratories;

Perform the work of Vascular Technologists;

Perform related duties as required.

There may be instances where individual positions must have additional licenses or certification. It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure the appropriate licenses/certifications are obtained for each position.

Desirable Qualifications

Completion of a training program accredited by the American Medical Association - Committee on Allied Health Education (AMA-CAHEA) for vascular ultrasound

AND

Possess current registration as a Registered Vascular Technologist through the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers

AND

Three years of experience performing vascular technology studies

Equivalent education/experience.
