Definition

Lead assigned staff in the performance of pulmonary function tests and assess the accuracy of test results; participate in the design of testing techniques; analyze test results for the development of research activities.

Distinguishing Characteristics

Regularly assign, instruct and check the work of others; under general direc¬tion, direct and coordinate the testing activities performed in a pulmonary function laboratory.

Typical Work

Direct tests performed by Pulmonary Function Technologists; assess the accuracy of test results;

Perform and participate in the design of advanced testing techniques;

Implement and monitor quality control procedures;

Direct patient scheduling priorities;

Perform mathematical and statistical analysis for the development of research activities and administrative requirements;

Orient physicians in training regarding testing techniques;

Maintain testing equipment;

Monitor and prioritize inventory;

Participate in budget preparation and personnel actions;

Perform the duties of Pulmonary Function Technologist II;

May represent the department at meetings;

Perform related duties as required.

Legal Requirement(s)

There may be instances where individual positions must have additional licenses or certification. It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure the appropriate licenses/certifications are obtained for each position.

Desirable Qualifications

Two years of experience as a Pulmonary Function Technologist 2 or equivalent

AND

Registration as a Pulmonary Function Technologist by the National Board for Respiratory Care.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
