Class Series Concept

Perform non-invasive cardiac diagnostic procedures and prepare related documentation.

Definition

Prepare patients for and conduct resting electrocardiograph examinations; prepare recordings for diagnostic analysis; clean and maintain recording and associated laboratory equipment.

Distinguishing Characteristics

Under general supervision, conduct routine resting electrocardiograph examinations.

Typical Work

Operate electrocardiograph equipment to obtain diagnostic readings on resting electrocardiograms; 

Prepare and instruct pediatric and adult patients for test procedures in ambulatory, intensive care, and nursing units; 

Recognize typical cardiac rhythms and dysrhythmias; notify appropriate medical staff person; 

Recognize patient or electrical artifact; determine source and attempt to eliminate interference; 

Cut and mount paper recordings selecting portions of the record with the least technical artifacts or errors, yet preserving clinically relevant information, such as premature beats, for diagnostic analysis; measure necessary ECG intervals; 

Maintain patient documentation file for all recordings; 

Complete patient charge slips for completed electrocardiograph procedures; 

Clean and maintain laboratory supplies and equipment; 

Maintain sterile techniques; 

Contact patients to test pacemaker functioning; 

May prepare and apply holter recorder; 

Perform and/or assist in cardiopulmonary resuscitation; 

Perform related duties as required.

There may be instances where individual positions must have additional licenses or certification. It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure the appropriate licenses/certifications are obtained for each position.

Desirable Qualifications

High school graduation or equivalent

AND 

Certified in Cardio-pulmonary Resuscitation

OR 

Completion of training and certified in CPR within 4 months from date of hire 

Equivalent education/experience.
