This is the senior, specialist or leadworker level of the series. Positions at this level perform skilled work in more than one trade or craft.  Incumbents typically specialize in one trade or craft but perform journey-level and semi-skilled work in a variety of disciplines.  Incumbents perform construction, maintenance, repair and modification of buildings, facilities, mechanical equipment, machinery and specific apparatus and utilize a working knowledge of several related skill fields such as plumbing, electrical, welding, carpentry, and machinist work.

Repairs and remodels buildings; frames walls, rafters, and roofs; hangs, tapes, finishes and paints interior sheet rock walls; installs counter tops; builds custom fit cabinets, desks, bookcases, work tables, and benches; hangs doors; paints interior and exterior;  

Installs and maintains plumbing, electrical and mechanical fixtures; installs, maintains, and repairs pipes, valves, drains, basins, faucets, lavatories, air conditioning, laundry equipment, kitchen equipment, gates and hydrants; 

Constructs forms and pours concrete using a wood float and steel trowel to finish the cement; builds concrete and wood cribbing; lays concrete blocks and bricks; 

Performs preventative maintenance and repair on all types of mechanical equipment such as laundry, kitchen, hospital, laboratory and air-conditioning equipment; clean or change filters, change oil, grease, adjust drive belts; inspect sprockets, shafts and bearings to ensure proper operations; 

May install and maintain elevator components, printing and bindery machines, power plant equipment, wood and metal working shop machines, and conveying systems;  

May perform preventative maintenance and repair of motor vehicles and heavy construction equipment, gas and diesel equipment; 

May operate Class A equipment in snow and ice control;  

Performs the work of a Maintenance Mechanic 2 and is assigned responsibility to lead the work of others;  

Develops preliminary cost estimates of repairs, maintenance or alteration projects;  

Assures adherence to safety rules and precautions by assigned personnel;  

Develops solutions to repair and maintenance problems;  

Develops methods and procedures to be followed by assigned personnel;  

Reads and interprets plans, blueprints and sketches;  

Positions may lead, supervise or instruct offenders or residents. However, lead worker positions are required to lead lower level staff.

There may be instances where individual positions must have additional licenses or certification. It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure the appropriate licenses/certifications are obtained for each position. 

Positions typically require completion of a recognized apprenticeship in a skilled mechanic trade and one year of experience as a journey-level worker in building and equipment maintenance, construction or repair work.  Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator’s license may be required.
