Definition

Supervise staff engaged in providing professional genetic counseling services, and participating in health sciences research, clinical care activities, and/or health sciences teaching activities. Direct the daily operation of a genetic counseling clinic/program, and participate in health sciences research, clinical care activities and/or participate in health sciences teaching activities.

Distinguishing Characteristics

With delegated authority, interview and recommend selection of applicants, conduct training, assign and schedule work, act upon leave requests, conduct annual performance evaluations and recommend disciplinary action. 

Under general direction, supervise the activities of assigned personnel engaged in providing genetic counseling services, participating in research, clinical care activities, and/or providing instruction in genetic counseling.  Direct the daily operation of a genetic counseling clinic/program.

Typical Work

Plan and organize activities of staff engaged in providing professional genetic counseling services to ensure compliance with protocols, clinical activities and quality assurance; 

Train and orient new staff; evaluate, develop and implement unit policies and procedures; 

Plan and conduct training for new employees and in-service education for staff; 

Order appropriate medical screening and diagnostic tests and relay abnormal results directly to referring physician and/or patient; assist patient in reproduction decision making; 

Provide specialty consultation to other health care staff including community physicians and other primary care providers; 

Assist in developing and implementing computerized systems for tracking patient data; 

Recommend specialized genetic testing; identify additional family members to be tested; 

Coordinate and participate in research activities; 

Evaluate unit programs through comparison of actual performance with budgeted and planned objectives; 

Act as primary liaison between genetic counseling services clinic, hospitals, patients and families, outside agencies, referring physicians, staff from other hospitals, and the general public by providing information and advice regarding genetic counseling services; 

Educate patients regarding their genetic risks/options; explain disease signs and symptoms, probability of recurrence, prognosis, diagnostic methods/procedures, alternate courses of action and available options; 

Coordinate services with clinics, outside agencies and other units; 

Participate in budget planning and preparation; monitor expenditure of funds; review monthly, quarterly and annual budget status reports; 

Oversee the preparation of forms and materials for clinic use such as patient consent forms, scheduling intake sheets, dictation glossaries, and reporting letters; 

Represent the unit in meetings and committees within and outside institution; 

Perform the duties of Genetics Counselor 2; 

Perform related duties as required.

Legal Requirement(s)

Accreditation Requirement:  Certification by a national certification board for medical genetics personnel as a Genetics Counselor.

There may be instances where individual positions must have additional licenses or certification. It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure the appropriate licenses/certifications are obtained for each position.

Desirable Qualifications

A Master's Degree in genetics counseling or a related field from a program accredited by a national certification board for medical genetics personnel 

AND 

Two years of experience as a Genetics Counselor 2.
