Definition

Coordinates clinical activities and student fieldwork programs within a recreation therapy division. Supervises recreation therapists and/or others; directs the work of recreation therapy students and volunteers. Performs assessments; plans and directs recreational therapy clinical services.

Distinguishing Characteristics

With delegated authority, interviews and recommends selection of applicants, conducts training, assigns and schedules work, acts upon leave requests, conducts annual performance evaluations and recommends disciplinary action.

Coordinates and develops clinical programs and student fieldwork programs for all recreational therapy services.

Typical Work

Performs complex assessments of patients in a specialty service and recommends appropriate and/or performs therapeutic recreation plan of care;

Develops and monitors treatment protocols, clinical programs, and quality assurance activities;

Develops, markets, implements, and evaluates student programs; instructs, directs the work of, and evaluates recreation therapy students;

Assists with the development and submission of budget requests; oversees the division's budget; solicits external funding to support therapeutic programs in conjunction with other medical center departments;

Assists in ensuring compliance with relevant accreditation and other standards;

Interviews and recommends selection of staff; trains new employees; evaluates staff performance; recommends disciplinary action;

Monitors productivity standards for therapeutic recreation services;

Orders and stocks equipment and supplies;

Conducts continuing education courses in recreation therapy and clinical specialties; conducts orientation for staff and other professionals;

Performs the duties of a Recreation Therapist 2;

Performs related duties as required.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of: skeletal, muscular, and neuron-anatomy; mental illness; principles, materials, and equipment of recreation therapy; various methods of provision in the physical, affective, social and cognitive realms; safety and risk management methods; assessment and evaluation reporting methods.

Ability to: assess, plan, provide, evaluate and modify programs/provisions to allow inclusive participation for individual patients; cooperative skills in working with patients; establish and maintain professional and working relationships with physicians and other treatment providers as well as other staff; instruct staff in areas of need regarding recreation therapy.

Desirable Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited Therapeutic Recreation Program

AND

Three years of clinical experience as a Recreation Therapist 2, one year of which must be in a specialty service

OR

Equivalent education/experience.
