Performs radiological health assessment assignments, under close supervision and guidance within established criteria, and assists higher level staff in the full range of radiological assessments assignments; serves as a member of a radiation emergency response team.

Conducts field inspections of users of ionizing radiation including medical, dental and industrial installations;

Consults with users on matters pertaining to radiation protection procedures, shielding, x-ray film use and use of radium and other radioactive materials;

When authorized by program head, represents the department in work with the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission on joint inspections of NRC licenses used by-product source and special nuclear material;

Reviews and approves plans for radiation installations as to protective equipment, structures and arrangement for radiation safety in connection with the health facilities; consults with architects and users on such installations;

Assists in planning for emergencies and serves as a member of emergency team for coping with radiation incidents and accidents;

Speaks before public, civic and professional groups for education and technical development purposes; assists in planning and conducting training programs for safe use of radiation;

Performs other work as required.

Knowledge of: principles, practices and methods of radiation detection and protection; interpretation and correction of radiation exposure problems; health physics survey methods; regulations relating to control of ionizing radiation; physical and biological sciences as related to radiation control; mathematics.

Ability to: plan and conduct surveys and training sessions; maintain liaison with governmental agencies and private users; cope with emergency radiation incidents; analyze data; write and speak effectively.

There may be instances where individual positions must have additional licenses or certification. It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure the appropriate licenses/certifications are obtained for each position.

A Master's degree in radiological health, radiation safety, health physics or closely related field. 

OR

A Bachelor's degree in a physical science, engineering or biological science and two years' experience in the use of radiation.

A Master's degree in any of the above fields may be substituted for one year of experience.
