Under direct supervision, perform semi-technical duties in the Specimen Processing Services Area of a Clinical Medical Laboratory.

Performs laboratory specimen processing consisting of receiving, identifying, assigning accession numbers, sorting, preparation and internal laboratory distributing of blood, urine, and other biological specimens;

Performs data processing distribution of laboratory reports to various patient units throughout the hospital; performs clerical duties such as filing, recording, and charting patient results; prepares and/or sends data for computer processing; performs filing related to storage of computed data;

Performs semi-technical procedures such as collecting and measuring samples, recording data, weighing specimens, etc.;

Operates laboratory equipment such as autoclave, centrifuge, copy equipment, etc.;

Operates laboratory computer terminals to enter or retrieve lab data;

Orders minor supplies from established sources and assists in inventories of supplies and equipment;

Required to perform and become proficient in human venipuncture techniques;

Responsible for logging, preparation, sending, receiving, and phone activity for the blood bank within the hospital;

Answers telephone calls concerning patient values, normal values, specimen requirements, procedures, cost of test, time required for tests, and preparation of specimens to outside labs for analysis;

Performs related duties as required.

Two years of college-level science in an applicable field 

OR

High School graduation or GED Certification AND one year of clinical laboratory experience in a Clinical or Public Health Laboratory

OR

Equivalent education/experience.
