Typical Work
Evaluates all prescribers’ orders and verifies correctness of entries in computerized patient profiles;
Educates patients and family members on medications dispensed;
Compounds, labels and dispenses medications and pharmaceutical preparations;
Ensures delivery of pharmaceuticals to patient as prescribed by physician;
Directs the work of pharmacy technicians, pharmacy assistants, residents, interns, and pharmacy and/or veterinary students;
Participates in clinical conferences;
Maintains accurate records of controlled substances dispensed, purchased and destroyed, and ensures proper storage of same;
Performs routine inspections of patient care areas and clinic medication drug rooms;
Performs related duties as required.
Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of: standard practices followed in compounding, filling, labeling, and distributing medical prescriptions; various medications, pharmaceuticals, and other medical supplies and solutions used in compounding and dispensing medications; pharmaceutical calculations; medical terms; classification of medications according to their action, use, and dosage; procedures related to medication supply work; use of weights, measures, and other dispensing devices; record keeping and inventory procedures.
