Definition

Supervises medical transcriptionists and other assigned personnel.

Distinguishing Characteristics

With delegated authority, interviews and recommends selection of applicants, conducts training, assigns and schedules work, acts upon leave requests, conducts annual performance evaluations and recommends disciplinary action. 

A Medical Transcriptionist Supervisor typically supervises eight to thirty employees.

Typical Work

Defines and interprets applicable rules, procedures and regulations for employees and clients; resolves problems between department staff and clients, both within and outside of the institution; 

Develops and implements policies and procedures, forms, work methods and standards, and schedules to be followed by department staff; establishes job priorities and coordinates work flow; 

Directs the preparation of departmental records, including statements of income and expenditures, and summaries of departmental operations; 

Translates equipment vendor instructions to employees; 

Interviews, checks references, and selects staff; evaluates staff performance and recommends training opportunities; identifies performance deficiencies; ecommends disciplinary action; 

Directs the maintenance of a variety of statistical materials for response to medical staff and administrator inquiries; 

Recommends budget requirements to accommodate staffing, equipment, supply and facility needs;

Performs the work of medical transcriptionists as required; 

Performs related duties as required.

There may be instances where individual positions must have additional licenses or certification. It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure the appropriate licenses/certifications are obtained for each position. 

Desirable Qualifications

High School graduation

AND

four years of occupational-level medical transcriptionist experience, including three years of experience utilizing terminology of multiple body systems or in a multi-specialty department and one year of experience as a lead transcriptionist.  Certified Medical Transcriptionist credentialing may substitute for one year of transcription experience.

OR 

Equivalent education/experience.
