Definition

Provides nursing consultative and educational services in public health nursing to community health agencies and professional organizations in State and to related programs within the Department of Health.

Typical Work

Provides consultant services in public health nursing to local public and private agencies; 

Counsel’s local health personnel in planning programs and distribution of nursing services according to local health needs; 

Participates with program directors in planning, implementing, and evaluating public health programs at State Health Department level; 

Through local health departments, collaborates with citizen groups and health personnel in studying planning, and implementing community health programs; 

Writes educational materials relative to public health and nursing for use in State Health Department programs or for publication; 

Promotes educational programs for nurses throughout State and participates in planning and conducting educational programs related to nursing service; 

Serves as representative of State Department of Health to various professional organizations and health agencies; 

Performs other work as required.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of:  principles and practices of general and public health and other professional nursing; community organization and resources and facilities related to public health nursing; effective teaching techniques; public health programs, laws, and regulations; principles and practices of organization, administration, and supervision; research and study methods; report preparation. 

Ability to: evaluate nursing service with regard to community situations and local personnel; suggest and stimulate local public and private cooperation and support for effective nursing services.

Desirable Qualifications

A Master's degree either in nursing, including or supplemented by approved curriculum in public health nursing or in public health from a university program approved by the American Public Health Association and two years of experience in public health nursing in an administrative, supervisory, consultant, or teaching capacity. In addition, specialist positions require completion of course in specialty and/or one year of experience in field of specialization. 

Note: A valid Washington State license to practice as a registered professional nurse Is required.
