Definition

Perform semi-skilled sheet metal work of graduated complexity in the institution's building maintenance and alterations program.

Distinguishing Characteristics

Positions in this class are distinguished by assignment as an apprentice trade trainee for the sheet metal journey class receiving on-the-job and academic training to achieve journey status.

Typical Work

Under guidance of a journeyworker, perform various sheet metal maintenance and alteration duties;

Obtain, prepare and deliver materials to the job site and assist in assembly and installation;

Complete on-the-job sheet metal trades training program requirements;

Complete related academic training which will consist of designated trades school and/or correspondence courses as available and applicable to the sheet metal journey class;

Perform related duties and functions as specified in approved apprentice training program.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of: standard practices, methods, materials, tools, and equipment of sheet metal trade; safety precautioning; sheet metals and their characteristics and uses.

Ability to: do arc and acetylene welding and brazing; work from blueprints, plans, and sketches; estimate materials and time needed to complete jobs; use hand and power tools.

Legal Requirement(s)

There may be instances where individual positions must have additional licenses or certification. It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure the appropriate licenses/certifications are obtained for each position.

Desirable Qualifications

High school graduation or equivalent.

Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license may be required; and meet qualification standards approved by Washington State Apprenticeship Council.
