Definition

Lead and work with floorlayers to perform journey-level floorlaying or floorcovering work.

Distinguishing Characteristics

Regularly assign, instruct, and check the work of others at a project or job location. Perform journey-level work in applying a variety of decorative and functional covering to floors, walls, and countertops.

Typical Work

Ensure safety rules and precautions are followed;

Develop preliminary cost estimates;

Scrape, chip, and clean surfaces to prepare for installation of covering;

Apply adhesives, pastes, and grouts;

Lay tile, linoleum, and rubber cove base;

Remove, repair, and replace damaged, loose, and broken asphalt, asbestos, vinyl, and rubber tile; repair and replace rubber cove base;

Lay carpet; measure and cut padding and carpet to size; sew, trim, and tack in place;

Operate power carpet stretcher, electric hammer and drill; use chisel, knife, carpet shears, needle and thread;

Inspect surfaces for damages; estimate time and materials for repair;

Drive service vehicle;

May repair and replace ceramic counter tops;

May repair and grout ceramic tile in bathrooms and shower stalls;

May perform work in other trades;

Perform related duties as required.

Legal Requirement(s)

There may be instances where individual positions must have additional licenses or certification. It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure the appropriate licenses/certifications are obtained for each position.

Desirable Qualifications

Completion of a recognized apprenticeship as a floorlayer or carpetlayer;

OR

Full journey status as a floorlayer or carpetlayer in a union;

OR

Four years' applicable work experience. Vocational training may be substituted for work experience on a year-for-year basis.

AND

One year experience performing journey-level floorlaying and floorcovering work.

OR

equivalent education/experience.
