Provides routine toxicology information and support within a specific program area to program managers, staff, and the public under the technical leadership or direction of a higher level toxicologist. Interprets toxicological studies and other technical information related to experimental and regulatory toxicology, human clinical toxicology, toxicokinetics, environmental fate, and environmental transport to determine potential adverse human health and/or ecological effects of exposure to environmental chemicals.

Works independently on straightforward issues of toxicological import that directly impact public health, with supervisory or Toxicologist 2 or 3 direction with regard to agency mission, policy, and context in relation to other agencies and the public;

Writes scientifically defensible, toxicologically and technically accurate, clearly written reports for peer review; presents information on health assessment in language understandable to the public;

Briefs management on straightforward toxicological/public health issues;

Represents the office and agency on advisory committees with other agencies and briefs management and colleagues about issues that impact public health;

Participates in team efforts on broader, more complex toxicological issues that pertain to public health; completes specific portions of larger team assessment effort and participates in writing the final product of the team effort;

Participates with members of the team in presenting and explaining the results of team's analysis to the public, local health departments, state and federal agencies, and the press;

Participates with other team members in briefing management on present and future public health implications of the assessment;

May participate in writing peer reviewed journal articles with other members of the team on findings of assessments;

Broadens own depth and breadth of public health/toxicological knowledge through professional development, including networking with other scientists and public health professionals, participating in seminars, workshops or courses and by maintaining current knowledge of the field through reading of the professional literature;

Performs other work as required.

Knowledge of: toxicology information and associated research methodology, statistics, and electronic databases.

Ability to: collect and interpret toxicology data in context of environmental health needs; perform health assessments; speak and write effectively.

A Ph.D. degree in toxicology or in a health or ecological related science with a major emphasis in toxicology.

OR

A Master's of Science degree in toxicology or in a health or ecological related science with a major emphasis in toxicology and one year of toxicology experience.
