Definition

Lead and work with Control Technicians to perform journey-worker level work in the inspection, testing, servicing, and maintenance of mechanical, pneumatic, electronic, and electrical controls for heating, air-conditioning, and related equipment.

Distinguishing Characteristics

Positions in this class are distinguished by responsibility to lead journey-worker Control Technicians on a project or at a job location, to instruct other assigned workers, to correct and specify methods, and to perform skilled repair, maintenance, and installation on mechanical, pneumatic, electrical and electronic controls.

Typical Work

Performs all duties of a Control Technician; 

Leads assigned personnel in the performance of work; 

Assures adherence to safety rules and precautions by assigned personnel; 

Develops preliminary cost estimates for installation and repair; 

Develops methods and procedures to be followed by assigned personnel; 

May perform work in other trades; 

Performs related duties as required.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of: equipment, methods and tools used in installations; operation, maintenance, repair and modification of air systems, pneumatic and electronic monitoring and measuring instruments; test instruments used in operation, calibration and repair of electronic and pneumatic instruments; record keeping. 

Ability to: read and understand instructional manuals, drawings, diagrams, plans and sketches using electrical and electronic symbols; fabricate minor equipment and electrical circuitry; keep records, make reports; establish and maintain effective work methods; schedule and assign work and maintain cooperative work relationships with others; work independently in improvising necessary systems components.

Legal Requirement(s)

There may be instances where individual positions must have additional licenses or certification.  It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure the appropriate licenses/certifications are obtained for each position.

Desirable Qualifications

One year of full-time experience as a Control Technician, or equivalent trade skill.  Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license may be required. 

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
