Under general direction, independently operate, maintain and perform minor repairs on a medium-sized (750-1200 pounds per hour capacity) medical/pathological incinerator.  Monitor computerized incinerator operating system and respond to system failures.  This is a single class, not part of a series.

Respond to system failures and take corrective action; 

Document violations of operating permit and work with appropriate health and safety offices to return system to normal operating conditions;  

Coordinate and direct the work of journey-level personnel in the repair and maintenance of incinerator systems;  

Quantify waste and determine loading levels; 

Evaluate the suitability of wastes to be incinerated; 

Handle and store wastes safely; 

Start, load, and adjust equipment for proper incineration of materials; 

Handle and dispose of ash and other residual material from incineration; 

Record equipment operation conditions such as time, weight, primary and secondary chamber temperatures, etc. and report any abnormalities; 

Take preventative or emergency action to control malfunctions such as close valves, adjust bypass, or shut down equipment; 

Perform minor equipment repairs and maintenance such as removing and cleaning nozzles, making minor adjustments to valves, instruments, or burners; 

Drive vehicles to collect and transport biohazardous materials; 

Maintain cleanliness of area surrounding incinerator; 

Perform related duties as required.

Certified as a Hazardous Waste Incinerator Operator.

Physical ability to perform required work such as, heavy lifting, wearing a heavy respirator AND one year of experience in the operation of an incinerator 

OR 

equivalent education/experience.

OR 

Ability to obtain certification no later than three months after date of initial employment.
