Definition

Serve as engineer of an oceanographic research vessel of 50 to 100 gross tons.

Distinguishing Characteristics

Under general supervision of the Master, have the principle responsibility for the care, maintenance and proper operation of main, auxiliary and electrical machinery and equipment of a small research vessel. Additionally, serve as a Mariner on such vessels.

Typical Work

Performs preventive maintenance of all machinery and equipment; accomplishes repairs within capability of ship's equipment and supplies; 

Prepares work requests for repairs by shipyard; maintains "on board" and "shore based" repair and replacement parts; prepares requisitions; 

Services all machinery; conducts initial start-up of prime movers; monitors operation of machinery; 

Maintains the machinery and equipment records; 

Stands wheel watches and is responsible for the safe navigation of the vessel while on watch; 

Assists in preparation and serving of meals; 

Performs duties as deckhand when required; operates deck gear for scientific party when required; 

Assists master in enforcing safety precautions and instructing scientific party in safety precautions and shipboard procedures; 

Performs related duties as required.

Legal Requirement(s)

U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner's Document as QMED in the rating of Junior Engineer, Oiler or Electrician 

                                                                            OR 

Any license as assistant or chief engineer or equivalent 

                                                                            OR 

Equivalent education/experience.
