NATURAL RESOURCE OPERATIONS SUPERVISOR 1
Definition
Plans, coordinates, and supervises a nursery greenhouse, seed orchard, bare-root facility, or other comparable natural resource operation
OR
Assists a higher level camp manager in managing natural resource operations at a correctional facility. The camp manager positions function as a second-line supervisor over inmate crews performing a variety of natural resource labor management activities.
Typical Work
Plans, organizes, directs and controls the work activities of a cooperative corrections camp or portion of a camp that performs labor intensive natural resource management activities; leads and/or coordinates work planning processes with agency field managers, staff resource managers, and outside local, State and Federal agency personnel; writes work plans; schedules and assigns work, sets performance standards and resolves problems in accomplishing work;
Coordinates activities for cooperative relations between DSHS/DOC and DNR such as operating agreements, facilities operations, inmate assignments and problems, interagency relations, etc., peculiar to joint operations of honor camps;
Directs maintenance, operations, security and record keeping of physical facilities including water, sewer, energy systems, and buildings;
Supervises crew supervisors of inmate crews in labor intensive natural resource management activities and coordinates project work with field units or other agencies; equips and trains 2-8, 10-person inmate crews; examples of work activities performed by crews are pre-commercial thinning, tree planting, recreation site and trail construction and maintenance, plantation maintenance, stream clean out, and facilities and grounds care and maintenance;
Supervises camp helpers, general repairers, forest technicians, equipment mechanics and operators, crew supervisors and similar staff in carrying out camp operations and work activities;
Serves as relief forest crew supervisor in emergency situations and relief camp manager during absences of same;
Assistant camp managers performs assigned tasks in management and supervision of equipment shops and operations;
Assists in the preparation of and initiates the yearly operating plan;
Plans and implements planting, packing, grafting, lifting, shipping, and other operational schedules;
Conducts tests to develop and modify cultural practices and operational methods; implements new methods for improvement of operational techniques and efficiency, cost effectiveness and the end product;
Inspects, tests, and determines type and extent of disease or insect presence; consults with scientific personnel; implements and monitors corrective measures;
Orders and maintains security of chemicals; calculates mixtures and trains subordinates in methods for safe usage;
Maintains surveillance of elements which may have an effect on the seedling crops, i.e., irrigation, nutrient levels, etc.; determines and implements the appropriate action to ensure healthy seedlings are produced;
Performs other work as required.
Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of: natural resource management operations methods, practices and techniques; principles and practices of forest nursery operation, cultivation, propagation, soil elements, disease and insects common to forest seedlings; methods and techniques of irrigation, sharing and other environmental controls; uses and application techniques of fertilizers and chemical sprays; equipment repair; shop management practices; equipment operations practices; management and supervision styles, methods and techniques.
Ability to: plan and manage activities related to forest nurseries; equipment operations, equipment repair shop and facilities operations; supervise, instruct, and evaluate employees.

Desirable Qualifications
A Bachelor’s degree involving major study in agronomy, horticulture, forest science, or a closely related field. Two years of technical or professional experience in a forest nursery is preferred.
OR
Five years of experience as a supervisor of crews performing natural resource labor management activities and one year of experience as a staff assistant performing professional natural resource management projects or tasks.
College education in a natural resource field or equivalent professional or technical experience will substitute, year-for-year, for up to four years of the crew supervision experience and one year of experience as a staff assistant performing professional natural resource management projects or tasks.
