Lead assigned personnel and perform complex optical work designing, troubleshooting, repairing, maintaining, installing, designing and constructing and testing optical devices, systems and ancillary equipment used in patient care, clinical, teaching and research laboratories.

Regularly assign, instruct, and check the work of others. 

Under general supervision, independently perform complex work as a senior-level optical technician on a variety of highly specialized optical devices, systems and ancillary equipment requiring special training such as troubleshooting and repairing lasers and electron microscopes used in patient care, clinical, teaching and research laboratories.

Receives and reviews parts, sketches, written and oral requests for work;  

Confers with faculty, staff, clients, coworkers, vendors in the development and design of complex optical experimental and research equipment; determines scope and nature of projects including specifications and operational limits; considers fabrication methods, materials, hardware, and component costs and suggests design changes as needed; 

Constructs complex optical systems, and ancillary equipment related to patient care, clinical, teaching and research equipment; 

Generates general schematics, designs relevant circuits and circuit board layout(s), writes software to drive microprocessor(s), and selects components; builds using hand and power tools; tests, debugs, and modifies as necessary to ensure proper operation; prepares appropriate documentation such as parts layout(s), schematic(s), and calibration procedure(s); 

Troubleshoots, repairs, and maintains a variety of microscopes ranging from simple binocular to complex photo-microscopes, multi-head microscopes, copolscopes, surgical microscopes, fluorescence and phase contrast microscopes, clinical diagnosis and treatment equipment such as phoropters, indirect opthalmoscopes, lensometers and endoscopes; 

Troubleshoots, repairs, and maintains fiber-optic light sources, opthalmoscopes/otoscopes, refractometers and other optical equipment used in direct patient care; 

Troubleshoots and repairs electronic circuits within optical devices; 

Maintains, troubleshoots, repairs, tests and modifies state-of-the-art photographic or audio-visual equipment; 

Performs preventive maintenance on patient care and clinical laboratory equipment; tests, diagnoses, adjusts and calibrates equipment to local, state, and other regulatory codes; advises health care professionals and administrators on compliance of equipment with fire and safety codes and modifies equipment to satisfy these requirements; 

Performs electrical safety testing; 

Orders and maintains stock of spare parts and materials needed for shop operations; 

Performs related duties as required.

One year of experience as an Optical Technician 2
