Independently performs technical laboratory work in a clinical, chemical or research laboratory. 

Under general supervision, performs routine laboratory tests, demonstrates and trains others in basic laboratory skills, verifies the quality of reagents and media.

Plans, schedules, assigns, supervises and coordinates work of lower laboratory staff; 

Performs routine clinical laboratory tests such as kit assays, bedside monitoring, automated chemistry tests, and cell counts on body fluids; 

Maintains cell culture systems, grows and harvests viral stocks, titer each lot of stock virus, and prepares viral lysates; 

Operates, calibrates and maintains laboratory equipment such as spectrophotometer, refractometer, conductivity meter, automated chemistry analyzer, bedside monitoring equipment, microscope, electronic cell counter, coagulation instrumentation; 

Troubleshoots and eliminates contamination or toxicity problems in cell cultures and media; performs quality control on reagents and viral lysates; 

Participates in demonstrating routine laboratory techniques to students and new employees; 

Performs the work of a Laboratory Technician 1; 

Performs related duties as required.

Knowledge of:  laboratory principles, practices, and techniques, care and operation of laboratory equipment; fundamental knowledge of specialties such as bacteriology, serology, hematology, parasitiology, histology, microscopy, immunology, organic and biochemistry, clinical and pathological laboratory tests; laboratory equipment, supplies, and reagents; report preparation.   

Ability to:  lead others; use laboratory equipment; understand and follow detailed written and oral instructions, formulae and charts; prepare clear and concise reports; maintain cooperative working relations with others; distinguish colors.

An Associate Degree from a Committee on Allied Health Education and Accreditation (CAHEA) accredited Medical Laboratory Technician program including courses in chemistry and biology

OR 

Completion of a course for laboratory assistants, approved by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists, may be substituted for two years of the required experience.  

OR 

Equivalent education/experience.
